The internet has opened up many new opportunities for drummers and musicians in general. If you are interested in learning to play the drums then the internet can serve as a great starting point.
By taking lessons on the internet you will be able to learn at your own speed, in your own time, and from your own home. And most importantly, you’ll be able to learn at a cheaper price!
Groove is King is a fairly new tuition website that hasn’t been online for a very long time. However it is already building up a reputation due to the tuition videos that have been placed on youtube.
The website offers some free drum lessons, and also has a paid service where drummers get access to a number of different other services. Your drumming instructor is a great teacher called Ashley Appling.
Like most other drum lesson websites, GrooveIsKing.com mainly offers online video tuition. The videos are good quality and all of the exercises that they contain are explained in a lot of detail.
The videos themselves have been shot at multiple angles, using a zoom feature to focus on certain parts and techniques that are deemed important. This is a great way to determine exactly how you should approach a part of a song.
Many of the free drum lessons can be found on youtube. This is a great place to start if you are thinking about signing up to the full program.
This is one of the most unique approaches to drum lessons I have ever seen on the internet. Groove is King will send you a daily email post with a new lesson. This will eventually accumulate into a full fledged course in learning how to play the drums.
This is a great feature if you are beginner, however if you want to skip the basics, or if you have been playing for a long time then this may not be relevant for you.
Just like you would be able a standard drum teacher, Groove is King provides an email Q and A service. This way you will be able to get tips and advice on your drumming first hand, rather than simply just watching videos. If you have a webcam then these approaches can be great as you will be able to record yourself playing and then send it in for feedback.
In conclusion I would recommend this program to a beginner that has little experience behind the kit. However if you are experienced, or if you are mid-high level then you may find the exercises in this program a little slow.
However, they are explained in great detail and there is nothing wrong with going back to relearn the basics. Many drummers find out when they do this that they have picked up bad habits over the years, and this could serve as an opportunity to correct them.
I would recommend to anyone learning drums to get a personal teacher if they can afford it, however I find myself recommending websites more and more to drummers, especially when a program like this comes around. I think that drummers should take a number of different approaches if they are serious about learning to play.
Where from here? We highly recommend Ashley Appling’s Program…
